"Holding one felt like holding a piece of a story too big to tell" - I love that line - can't think of anything that better captures the wonder and curiosity that separates us from mere automatons - something that draws one toward science or other paths that make us question and want to understand more. Would that we all had that quality instead of thinking we know it all, or can simply follow some old book that knows it all.
I have to say, though, that paleontology is one of the most humbling sciences there are. When you think you have it all figure it out, someone found a new fossils and we need to rewrite the story of evolution from the ground up (once again)
