This is great and all, and I can't say I disagree in principle. However, when it comes to the environment, I don't see things changing any time soon.

Humans have been fundamentally disconnected from the natural world as populations have piled into cities in ever increasing numbers. People no longer feel connection for each other, let alone the world around them!

Without a reversal of this trend, people's apathy about ecological issues will only increase. I do hold out some hope however. Birth rates are dropping and will probably continue to do so - which is perfect when AI and automation looks set to steal so many jobs.

If we truly are on the cusp of a technological revolution, we stand at a crossroad. Do people continue living on top of each other, living in tiny apartments whilst they're given spending credits by some sort of UBI system? Or do they move back out into the country and learn to get their hands dirty and begin supplementing any UBI or Social Credit with organic food grown with their own hands?

Only time will tell. But people need to know what is at stake and what they're missing out on.

This deeply resonates with me! Just a few days ago I came across a job advert that perfectly fitted my personal sense of ikigai, in fact, better than any job advert I've ever seen in my life (big words, I know)! It was a trainee position in ecosystem restoration. I decided I had to apply within seconds.

However... I had to let it go. The job was perfect and I'm absolutely sure I'd perform great, but the application form prioritised bureaucracy over passion about training and working in this field. Neurodivergence + 5 years as a stay-at-home parent due to no childcare and sickness meant a complicated work history (despite having a MA) and I couldn't provide the references that were needed. Without it, I could never even get to a stage where I talk to an interviewer in person and demonstrate how passionate I am about this training. Soul crushing.

This world needs more trainee positions that are truly open to everyone and will consider who the candidate is in person, not on the basis of whatever is written on a piece of paper. As it is, entering a different field and pursuing your true passion is prohibitive for many and their potential is wasted.
